The GSO Co-Op Plan
Provides Free Bulletins
and Income For GSOs

The GSO Co-Op Plan was originally developed to allow ASGS to work with graduate student organizations to make ASGS memberships available to GSO student members. The plan provided a means for traditionally cash-strapped GSOs to earn revenue to support their organizational operations.

1. In the original plan, ASGS provided the GSO with free long-term subscriptions to THESIS NEWS. In exchange, the GSO agreed to display the bulletins in the office, and to maintain a supply of ASGS membership applications for distribution to interested students. The GSO also agreed to place a one-page news release, announcing the plan, in its student newsletter, and to carry short 2- to 4-line reminders in subsequent issues of their campus newsletter.

2. When ASGS student memberships from the GSO reached a "critical mass" (usually 25 or more students), ASGS offered the GSO the opportunity to become a distribution hub for ASGS bulletins. ASGS then sent all member copies of THESIS NEWS directly to the GSO, which assumed responsibility for distributing the bulletins, and, in return, received a handling fee based on the number of memberships. This fee could have amounted to more than one thousand dollars a year, depending on the number of student members.

3. Now that ASGS is in the process of converting its publication of THESIS NEWS to an on-line format, the previous GSO program is undergoing revision to allow these organizations the opportunity to continue to cooperate with ASGS for mutual benefit, while at the same time, accomodating the advantages of the new channels of information exchange afforded by the World Wide Web. Details of this new, revised GSO program will be announced soon.
