FOR MICROSOFT WORD 5.X-98*
FOR USE ON THE
MACINTOSH COMPUTER
These instructions for use of Editorial Style Templates from the Association for Support of Graduate Students are prepared for persons with an understanding of the operation of the Macintosh computer, but little or no experience with style sheets in Microsoft Word. (To simplify your use of the templates, print out these instructions for easy reference.)
This disk contains three Turabian editorial style templates, formatted according to general Turabian style as indicated in A Manual for Writers, Sixth Edition, by Kate L. Turabian. Please check with your school for any specific modifications to the general Turabian style.
The templates are set for default margins of 1 1/2 on the left, and 1 top, bottom, and right (except for the frontice pages which begin 2 from the top). The templates are--
1. Turabian Frontice_Wd5_Mac
This is the template you should use when you are setting up the frontice sections of your dissertation, including title page, signature page, copyright page, abstract, table of contents, list of tables, list of figures, acknowledgments, and dedication.
For the Frontice template, the styles consist of the following**--
- Head-Lvl 1 (centered, all capital letters, with 2 inches of space above the heading )
- Head-Lvl 2 (centered, all capital letters)
- Normal (12-pt Courier type, double-space, first line of paragraphs indented 7 spaces [0.68 inch])
- Table of Contents (flush left text with tab stops, including leader)
2. Turabian Text_Wd5_Mac
This is the template you will use for the chapters of your dissertation.
For the Text Template, the styles consist of the following**--
- Head-Lvl 1 (centered, all capital letters, with 2 inches of space above the heading )
- Head-Lvl 2 (centered, all capital letters)
- Head-Lvl 3 (centered, initial caps, italicized)
- Head-Lvl 4 (centered, initial caps, no italics)
- Head-Lvl 5 (flush left, initial caps, italicized)
- Normal (12-pt Courier type, double-spaced)
- Quotes (12-pt Courier type, indented 4 spaces [0.41 inch], single-spaced)
3. Turabian Ref/App_Wd5_Mac
This is the template you will use for your references and appendices.
For this template, the styles are the same as for the Text Template, with the addition of.
- References (12-pt Courier type, single spaced, with the first line of each paragraph flush left, and all following lines indented 5 spaces [0.5 inch]).
In addition to containing differing styles, the three templates vary in placement of page numbers. Frontice template pages are numbered without a page number on the title page or copyright page, and with page numbers in lowercase roman numerals at the center bottom of all subsequent pages. Text and Reference/Appendix template pages are numbered with arabic numerals at the center bottom of the first page of each chapter, appendix, or reference section, and at the top center of all remaining pages. (Optionally, Turabian allows these numbers at the right-hand corner.)
* These templates work with Microsoft Word, versions 5.0, 5.1, 5.1a, and Word 98.
** Note that the styles, "footer" and "header" may also appear among your styles. These cannot be removed, and should be ignored.
